| The stone elements in the temples |
The stone parts, the cladding and the decorative stone elements of the ancient buildings are, generally speaking, the most damaged and dispersed. In fact, in Schiavi, as elsewhere in the mediaeval period, the structures were reused and were seen as an excellent source of building materials.
Because of this, limestone blocks, worked stone slabs, bases, cornices, columns and capitals lie on the ground in the area in front of the Italic temples. They were removed from their original location (primarily the main temple), but can now no longer be attributed to any building with any certainty, except in a small number of cases.
We cannot rule out that some of these elements belonged to smaller architectural structures, which completed the sacred area and have now disappeared or have not yet been identified.
The column drums, the bases defined as "Attic" bases because of their moulding, and the Ionic style, 4-sided, square, schematic capitals can certainly be attributed to the large temple. The virtual "reassembly" of these elements has made it possible to reconstruct a complete column, which reached the considerable height of almost 6 metres, and was comprised of a base, smooth shaft which tapered towards the top, and capital, on which the wooden roof trabeation rested. |
