| Sacred Italic temple site |
The sacred Italic temple site, discovered in the 19th century, was partially excavated in 1937. The two temples were completely excavated between 1964 and 1974, with the minor temple being reconstructed. The Abruzzo Department of Archaeological Assets resumed systematic excavations in the sanctuary and adjacent areas in 1992, producing some major results.
The sanctuary, terraced by a polygonal and ashlar masonry wall, was possibly monumentalised during the 2nd century B.C., when the main temple was built in a central position. A second, smaller holy building was built next to it in the early 1st century B.C., during the expansion and refurbishment of the holy complex, which also involved the construction of an altar in the zone in front of the minor temple.
The area was partially buried by a landslide and was occupied again between the Middle Ages and the 14th century, with the construction of a tower on the polygonal masonry wall, a church on the main temple and a necropolis, covering much of the ancient ruins. |
